In the feudal era, strange tales of ghosts and monsters abounded. Whenever disaster struck, ignorant people blamed ghosts and monsters, holding banquets and building altars to appease the ghostly flames. Thus, the Kin Gods came into being. As technology advanced and minds were freed, their worshippers dwindled and their shrines fell into ruin. To survive, these Kin Gods, deprived of faith, brought disasters and then saved people from them to gain worshippers. The world cursed them as strange ghosts. People who had lost their homes and families gathered together and formed contracts with the fallen Kin Gods. In exchange for a clan's faith, they gained the power to exterminate strange ghosts. They were honorably known as Purifiers.

As time passed, the strange ghosts were gradually wiped out, but the cost remained high. Some clans dwindled in number, and their contracts were scattered across the world. Then a new force emerged, whom the world fearfully called the Tainted.

To curb this new force, the clans united, sharing their secret histories, techniques, and resources. Only then did the struggle between the two sides reach a balance.

The peace built on a facade was shattered when a scroll of forbidden divine contracts came to light. The one who had formed a contract with the forbidden entity searched for the lost divine contracts, shattering the peace that had been sitting atop a powder keg.

"There are 58 scrolls of divine contracts in total. The Purifiers have 15. We don't know how many the Tainted have, but after looking into it, I'd estimate they have about 10. Do you understand what I mean?"

The one who had formed a contract with the forbidden entity seemed to belong to neither side.

"Was I chosen because I'm also a member of one of the lost clans?"

With trepidation in his heart, the young man gazed hopefully at the director of the Strange Powers Psychology Center.

But the director's eyes turned toward someone in the distance, dozing on the sofa.

"Yes."
