The scholarship race was heating up. Outside the school dean’s office, Lin Yujing and Shen Juan came face-to-face in the narrow hallway.

Lin Yujing looked distraught, tears in her eyes. “Shen, I’ll be honest with you. I’m from the countryside, and my family is dirt poor. My original name was Lin Cuihua. I’m the only person from Lotus Village who’s ever made it to a big city to study. If I don’t get this scholarship, I won’t be able to pay my tuition. And if I can’t pay my tuition, I’ll have no choice but to go back to the village and feed pigs…”

Shen Juan looked relaxed and nonchalant. “What a coincidence. I’m from the neighboring Lotus Leaf Village, and my real name is Shen Tiezhu. I don’t just have to feed pigs, I have to work the fields too.”

Lin Yujing: “…”

They stared at each other expressionlessly for three seconds, then turned and walked away in perfect unison.

Shen Juan climbed into his private helicopter. Lin Yujing got into her extended-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom.

A story about two rich people who each day pretend, with complete sincerity and determination, to be poor in front of the other.
