After dying unexpectedly in the real world, the protagonist transmigrates into the book he was reading most recently. He assumes he will die according to the story, but that never happens. Instead, as he clashes in the palace with the book’s original dark, villainous emperor, the two develop feelings for each other. The protagonist begins to hope he can change the emperor, but the emperor believes he does not understand him, driving a wedge between them.
Just then, foreign forces invade, and the protagonist is held back by the emperor. Someone in the palace betrays the kingdom, and the dynasty teeters on the brink of collapse. The long-lost eldest princess is found and forced to take the regency. The emperor and protagonist join forces with her, working from within and without to reclaim power. The protagonist also succeeds in changing the emperor’s fate. Later, he is enfeoffed in the north as the dynasty’s only male empress, and the two live happily ever after. 1v1, happy ending.
