Synopsis

On April 10, 1944, during the final stages of the Battle of New Britain, I had the honor to assume command of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division (Reinforcement). New Britain was the unit's second military operation. But we didn't know then that it would still face two other battles: Peleliu and Okinawa. Each time was more intense and costly than the previous two. After leaving New Britain and going to the "rest camp" at Pavuvu in the Russell Islands, we began comprehensive training in preparation for the future "standoff operation" against Peleliu Island in the Palau Islands. This action is little known to the public and receives little credit, but it was one of the bloodiest and most grueling battles of the Pacific War.
