People hear and use the word "capitalism" all the time, but what does this word actually mean? James Fulcher draws on vivid and detailed cases, from the East India Company in the early 17th century to the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995. He examines the different forms of capitalism in Britain, Japan, Sweden and the United States, and explores whether capital has escaped national boundaries and is moving toward globalization. He also cited the tulip mania in the Netherlands in the 17th century, the recent Southeast Asian financial crisis, and the Enron and WorldCom incidents in the United States as examples to point out the potential crisis tendencies of capitalism, and thus discussed the future of capitalism: Is capitalism heading towards some kind of ultimate crisis? Where is the social system that will replace capitalism?
