The Birthday Song at Midnight

At one in the morning, I was suddenly woken by the sound of a birthday song coming from the dorm across the hall.

I went outside to take a look. Through the glass balcony door, I could vaguely make out flickering flames and a crowd of people huddled together.

I rolled my eyes, thinking they were crazy. Who celebrated a birthday in the middle of the night? Didn't they worry they might start a fire in the dark?

Still annoyed, I went to the bathroom, then returned to my room, found a pair of earplugs, and fell asleep again.

The next day, screams woke us up. That's when we learned there had been a murder in the dorm across the hall.

Ten people in one dorm, and not a single survivor.
