Seeing my bloodshot eyes, Father gave a bitter smile. He slowly crouched down and gently stroked my little hair bun. “Hongdou, Father is a great general of Shennong. If I win this battle, I’ll take you to find your mother and sister, all right?”

Choking back tears, I asked, “And what if you lose?”

Father was silent for a long time, then said softly, “If I lose, I hope little Hongdou won’t hate me.”
