A History of the Nanjing Massacre (Japanese Edition)

The History of the Nanjing Massacre is the Japanese edition of The Complete History of the Nanjing Massacre, edited by Professor Zhang Xianwen. Over more than a decade, Professor Zhang and a group of historians visited countries including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Japan, conducting extensive research in archives and libraries. Drawing on a wealth of firsthand Chinese and foreign-language documents and oral histories, they devoted themselves to studying and writing this history. The book offers a comprehensive examination of the Japanese army’s massacres, sexual violence, destruction of the city, and looting in Nanjing. It clarifies how the Japanese army established military, economic, and social control over the Nationalist government’s capital after its fall; highlights the humanitarian efforts of the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone in protecting and rescuing refugees; and revisits the responses of Chinese and foreign media and the international community to Japanese atrocities. It also reveals the verdicts handed down after the war by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal of the Ministry of National Defense. By laying bare the truth of history, it powerfully refutes the false claims of Japanese right-wing groups that deny the Nanjing Massacre. This is a rigorous work of history that helps readers understand the Nanjing Massacre, one of humanity’s great tragedies, accurately.
