Pokemon: I Just Want to Slack Off, So How Did I Become Champion?

In the Kalos Region, in an old house on the outskirts of Laverre City, Shinguu Kawa Tetsu lounged in a wicker chair, munching on a berry. The second son of an ordinary local tea merchant family, he lived by the motto, “If I can lie down, I won’t train; if I can drink tea, I won’t take risks.” Even when his father nagged, “The kid next door, from the Lysandre family, can already command a Gyarados,” he merely lifted Froakie onto his face like an eye mask. “What’s the rush? I have plenty of time to evolve after I finish this cup of flower tea.”

After all, this Starter Pokémon, casually handed to him by an elder in the family, could barely use Bubble Beam without sounding like it was yawning. Then one day, his sister returned from Lumiose City and upended his tea table. “Professor Sycamore says your Froakie inherited a special move!” In the courtyard, the little fellow who was always half asleep had built a two-meter-tall defensive fortress out of the bubbles that spilled from its mouth while dozing.

Forced to set out on a journey, Kawa Tetsu took along a breeder’s handbook that had been shoved into his hands while he pretended to sleep, a packet of unbrewed Inkberry tea, and Froakie, who loved napping on top of his head. And so began his “reluctant” tour of Kalos. When Team Flare’s schemes threatened the family tea plantation, and Greninja’s cloak became entangled with the light left behind by Xerneas, the boy sunbathing in a café in Ancient Wood Town suddenly realized that even the most ordinary bloodline could conceal ripples capable of overturning the world.

“So what exactly do you see in this guy?” Kawa Tetsu asked, utterly resigned, as Goodra willingly burrowed into its Poke Ball. Meanwhile, the Key Stone in his pocket was being polished to a shine with a Vine Whip by a certain Floette he had been hiding.
