Crime and Punishment (Guomai Classic)

Today, I finally finished reading this work. First of all, let me talk about my first reading experience; this novel is difficult to attract readers when reading it for the first time. It can even be said to be boring and difficult to understand. You have no idea what the author wants to write. I was confused after reading the first two chapters, and I couldn't even remember some of the names. This situation will become more serious later on, because too many people have the same name [laughs awkwardly], that is, they have the same name or suffix. However, I have to say that this is a very, very classic work. Especially the last few chapters, where the protagonist redeems himself, are worth watching again and again. In the text, the descriptions of each character are wonderful. What impressed me most were the two "villains" and the investigator. They are Luzhin, Gev (the name is too long), and Porfiry. Really, each of the three people has their own characteristics, and their shadow can be seen in reality. In terms of storyline, the content of this book can be divided into two parts like the title, Crime and Punishment. The first two chapters describe the protagonist's crime process, and the next six chapters are all about the protagonist's punishment, both inner and physical, and finally redemption.

The protagonist, Raskolnikov, was originally a student who was in dire straits. He was trapped in the desperate situation at the bottom of the world. He completely believed in the philosophy of extreme utilitarianism and superhuman self-interest. He personally concocted his own fallacious creed: the world is divided into two types: mortal ants and heaven-born giants who are beyond the constraints of laws and morals. The giants can trample on the weak at will, break all the rules of good and evil in the world, and do evil and evil in the name of noble and legitimate. In order to thoroughly confirm this cold philosophy and escape from the fate of poverty and lowliness, he deliberately plotted to murder the old woman and innocent people. He tried to rely on rational thinking to completely crush the conscience that was born with empathy and compassion. He used a set of self-consistent nihilistic theories to completely wash away his crimes and committed evil, and personally completed the extreme test of using philosophy to obliterate human conscience. But his conscience, which he thought had been sealed and buried by reason, never ceased to bite him as soon as he started writing. The endless fear day and night, the torture of guilt with nowhere to hide, the unwarranted outbursts of kindness, and the empathy of others can instantly defeat all his carefully constructed paranoid theories. He was awake and trapped in spiritual purgatory throughout the whole process, and all superhuman philosophical arguments were reduced to shameful disguises to deceive himself and others. In the end, he could no longer bear the mental torture of his conscience asking him day and night, and put aside all his arrogance and paranoia and took the initiative to plead guilty and submit to the law. Face all your sins in the midst of suffering, redemption and sincere love, get rid of your twisted and cold extreme obsessions, and regain your true humanity and kindness. The whole closed loop is just like the conclusion of the opening chapter. He tried his best to kill his natural conscience with cold and empty philosophy. In the end, only his original conscience that has never been completely wiped out can pull him out of the abyss of self-created destruction and complete the complete rebirth of his soul.

He thought he was righteous, but he could not escape the condemnation of his conscience. I like the part in the book where he surrenders under the inspiration of Sonia, which allows people to see the complexity of human nature and the possibility of redemption. This book is really worth reading and will make you think more deeply about human nature and society.
