After the country endured temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for weeks, people watched the months tick by, until a sudden cold snap swept across the nation. First came pleasant weather in the twenties, but within days the temperature plunged to dozens of degrees below zero. At last, the television stations issued a cold-weather warning, reporting that satellite monitoring suggested the low temperatures might persist for years. Soon, even the broadcasts went dark: the equipment linking the satellites to Earth had frozen and cracked. Yan Yan and Mo Xiaowan had been friends since childhood.
