Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Tragic Love of Hate and Desire

When the hero and heroine were young, they met at the perfect moment and fell deeply in love. Unfortunately, their love was not to be, and they were forced to part ways. By a twist of fate, they meet again as adults. He has become the Crown Prince, while she enters the palace in someone else’s place and becomes his concubine. They meet, yet neither recognizes the other.

There are many other love stories in this book. One young lady who enters the palace alongside the heroine has no love for the emperor, but falls for a guard by the Crown Prince’s side. Her painful, unrequited love nearly costs her life. Can her devotion move the guard, whose heart is as cold as ice?

The Crown Princess, forced into the palace by the powerful Chancellor, is met with nothing but the Crown Prince’s loathing. His words wound her time and again. Yet she is gentle and virtuous, and no matter how often he hurts her, she continues to repay him with a passionate heart. His disgust and rejection turn to respect and affection, but when he finally comes around, it is too late. The woman he loves is gone.

The second male lead, whose love has turned to hatred, loses the heroine and enters the palace alone, becoming the Crown Prince’s trusted mentor and friend. When faced with his rival in love, is his next move a scheme or a stroke of strategy?

To be honest, when I was writing this book, Hao looked in my mind just like Ye Hua, played by Mark Chao: cold on the outside, but gentle and passionate within. By contrast, Feng, the protagonist, remained rather indistinct to me. Only after I saw Hou Minghao in The Journey of Legend did Feng’s image suddenly come into focus. He can be gentle or cold, youthful or profound. It’s hard to believe that the baby dragon just hatched in Back From the Brink and Zhao Yuanzhou in The Journey of Legend are played by the same person. Sure enough, only someone like Feng could make people fall for him at first sight.
