The story begins in City A, Long Hong’s hometown. Because he was born under an ill-starred fate and suffered a great calamity as a child, Long Hong also became possessed by a ghost. By a stroke of luck, he crossed paths with the occultist Old Lan, who took him on as his sole disciple. First, he helped Liu Tianlong, the head of City A’s leading real estate group, deal with the haunting in his home. Then he returned to the old residence and listened to his grandfather tell its story. First, Old Lan’s grandfather found a book with blank pages in the village. It foretold many things, but after revealing secrets of heaven, he died unexpectedly. Then came the story of Old Lan’s father as a child. One night during the Ghost Festival, he was walking home with Old Lan’s grandfather when they encountered a Taoist priest of limited skill exorcising a ghost in a temple. When they came upon them, they intervened and saved the ghost, sending it on to the afterlife and sparing it from being utterly annihilated. This led Old Lan’s father, who had never believed in ghosts, to inherit his grandfather’s legacy.
