Huang Ya is reborn as a cauliflower snake. With no System or treasured artifact to protect him, he takes a job under the Green Snake Spirit in the Green Snake Cave on Gourd Mountain. There, he learns that the Golden Snake Spirit and Scorpion Spirit will break free in little over a hundred years.
At a banquet hosted by the Green Snake Spirit, Huang Ya learns that the Three Demons and Four Monsters are disciples of the Jie School, which welcomes all without discrimination. The gathering benefits every demon present, and Huang Ya receives a method for refining his body: the Vajra Hand Bodhisattva Method of Primordial Unity (the relic of the golden elixir shares the same benevolent intent; the Three Teachings were one family all along).
The Investiture of the Gods came about because the Twelve Immortals under Primordial Heavenly Lord had fallen into worldly calamities and faced the punishment of death. The Jade Emperor also demanded that the twelve immortal leaders acknowledge him as their sovereign. The Shang dynasty was due to fall and the Zhou dynasty was destined to rise, and the great tribulation of the immortals had arrived. Thus, the Three Teachings jointly drew up the Investiture of the Gods, with the Chan School, the Jie School, and humanity represented, and the gods divided into eight ranks.
The Jie School welcomed all without discrimination, and immortals flocked to its doors (they wanted everything). But its disciples were a mixed lot, uneven in ability (the school couldn't keep them in line). Many Jie immortals were honest and straightforward, and stuck to the rules (they fought by the rules but ignored their own school's precepts); few were truly shrewd (they liked putting on an act). In the end, some were named on the list (those with a little real ability), while others were taken away (the Western Religion had its eye on them). The mighty Jie School fell apart, and its lineage declined (with only the Holy Mother of No Birth left as a lone successor).
Elder Brother Taishang Laojun (true yin) and Second Brother Primordial Heavenly Lord (plays favorites and relies on power) jointly led the Chan School. The two lords looked down on creatures with fur or scales, born in moisture or hatched from eggs. They also excelled at the virtues of the Chan Way (knowing which side to back), the art of making distant allies while attacking nearby foes (insider trading), and concealing their schemes deep as a frozen pool (pulling off resurrections). The Twelve Immortals seemed to lack virtue and resort to questionable methods (fighting dirty). (Also read the author's notes in chapters one and two; they are definitely subjective and objective.)
