The Gambler (A Classic Psychological Novella by Dostoevsky)

Who would regard me as a human being? They will only treat me as a slave, a low-class person, and an animal. I want to be a human being. I have to make a bet for myself. If I win, I will gain dignity and appreciation. At least at this moment, I feel like I have joined them and become a human being, although they still look at me, an upstart, with contempt. But what the heck, I won. Life is a big gamble, and you and I have been in the game all our lives. Everyone has different chips and different fates. Some people leave the game losing everything, while others win a lot (and then lose everything again). If you want to win, sometimes you have to gamble, bet your life, bet your luck, bet your whole life.

Ordinary people probably want to live a good life, but the greed and pleasure of human nature are often difficult to overcome, which leads to them becoming slaves. The world will stop when they cry. I hope everyone can stay away from the temptation of the devil and cherish the present.

There are intrigues between people with different agendas, and once the gamblers are stimulated and tempted by money, they can no longer control their gambling behavior until the money is gone and they are down and out. Ren is hoping to come back again without losing hope.

I think the novella "The Gambler" by Dostoevsky is really wonderful. The author is also a gambler himself, so his portrayal of the psychology of gambling is particularly realistic. I felt a sense of powerlessness: even if I know rationally that 10 out of 10 bets will lead to losing, and if you don't bet, you will win; but when the temptation of getting rich overnight and quickly doubling your wealth is present, people still can't control their greed, and they still have to go down the road of no return. The Frenchman is indeed annoying, but the relationship between the protagonists Alexei and Polina is also very unhealthy. Alexey himself recalled that his relationship with Polina was like this: "It was almost impossible to say anything definite and certain. On the contrary, everything was so illusory and strange, unfounded and even absurd." Polina asked him to provoke the German baron to play pranks and make him willing to sacrifice his life for her to obey her words, including the fact that Alexei won 50,000 francs in a bet. The original intention was to help Polina get rid of the Frenchman, but Polina threw the 50,000 francs in Alexei's face... This shows that this relationship is full of control and tramples on the bottom line, which is indeed ridiculous. My favorite thing in this novel is the grandmother. This character has a very distinct personality. I think she is a hard-core old lady with strong vitality and a strong sense of justice. I laughed out loud at her words. Not only was she kind to the servants, but she was also willing to help Polina. Although she also lost all her money in the casino, she was responsible for everything she did. After her death, she left a fortune of 7,000 pounds to Polina. There is another gentleman in the article, the British gentleman Astley. In the end, Alexei not only squandered the 200,000 francs he had won by chance because of gambling, but also went to jail for debt. It was this British gentleman who took the initiative to help him, funded him with a sum of money, and gave him advice. But this British gentleman also knows that once you become addicted to gambling, you will lose no matter how much money you give, so he has seen the outcome clearly. Sure enough, the whole novel ends with Alexey continuing to gamble.

This book made me see the fragility of human nature in the face of money. Alexey fell into a gambling frenzy to save his lover, just like I studied hard to get out of the mountains. The psychological descriptions in the book are very real and made me feel the same way. "Man is a mystery. It should be solved. If you spend your whole life solving it, don't say you have lost time." This sentence deeply inspired me. We are all exploring the mystery of life. No matter what the result is, the process itself is a kind of growth.
