Making Paper Effigies

Also known as: Qingyang Funeral Shop: The Years I Spent in the Funeral Business

The ancients used to say that getting involved with the dead never brought anyone any good.

Some lost both parents as children; others saw their marriages end and their families torn apart.

These rumors aren't entirely unfounded. After all, those who make their living from the world of the dead are fated to suffer the Five Deficiencies and Three Lacks.

Because Lin Jinghong was born under an unusual fate, his mother died in childbirth. Unable to accept his wife's death, his father jumped to his death.

Only his grandfather remained, raising Lin Jinghong from childhood. What no one knew was that ever since Lin Jinghong was born, his grandfather had been collecting bones.

They were for a ritual to borrow life from a hundred bones, to be performed twenty years later.

Because of Lin Jinghong's unusual fate, his grandfather had calculated that he would not live to see twenty.

Lin Jinghong had been a dazed, foolish child, and so he muddled through nearly twenty years. On the day of his twentieth birthday,

his grandfather wrote a farewell letter, sat down in his rocking chair, and fell into a deep sleep…

“Jinghong, I know you understand everything. Making a living from the world of the dead is your fate in this life. Make a name for yourself on Qingyang Street!”

Lin Jinghong took over the funeral shop, Lin Yitang's establishment…

His road ahead was long…and far.
