The Northern and Southern Dynasties in an Age of War: Liu Yilong's Reign of Peace

A tale from the Southern Dynasties about Liu Yu and his sons bringing stability to Jiangnan and campaigning north to reclaim the Central Plains.

Emperor Wu of Song, Liu Yu, put down domestic rebellions three times and launched two northern campaigns, striking fear into the northern states. The Liu Song dynasty had a chance to unify the Central Plains, but Liu Yu’s overthrow of the Jin dynasty and founding of Song cost it the best opportunity.

After Liu Yu’s death, his second son Liu Yizhen and the crown prince Liu Yifu fought for power. Both were deposed and killed by the ministers entrusted with the young emperor’s care. His third son, Liu Yilong, ascended the throne and bided his time, overthrowing powerful ministers at home and launching another northern campaign abroad. The times were against him, and all three northern campaigns ended in crushing defeat. As powerful ministers rose and fell, three rebellions broke out within the country. Under Liu Yilong’s reign, Jiangnan enjoyed thirty years of peace during the “Reign of Yuanjia.” But Liu Yilong was brutally murdered, and Jiangnan plunged into chaos once more.
