Pride in a Silent World: Heather Whitestone, Miss America 1995

This book is based on my mother's own account. It tells how she raised me, her thoughts on the many choices she had to make, and more. In many ways, my family was a typical American family. We weren't very wealthy, nor did we have a prominent name. We lived in a pretty bungalow in a middle-class neighborhood, and on weekends my father often took us sailing. My sisters and I rode a yellow school bus to public school, and like most of our friends, we often took odd jobs in the afternoons. Our parents both went to work every day. We had no financial problems, though my sisters and I argued. Apart from my deafness, it was an ordinary, “normal” life.
