A Study of Single Women in Early Modern British Society

In the long-term study of women's history, class, race, ethnicity and religion have always been regarded as the most important categories of analysis. In fact, marital status has profoundly shaped all aspects of women's lives. In early modern England, not only were there many differences between single and married women, but also unmarried and widowed women who were both single groups had their own unique experiences. Generally speaking, widows received more tolerance and support than unmarried women because of their role as wives or mothers. But as women without husbands, widows and unmarried women face many similar situations. During this period, single women took advantage of the favorable opportunities brought by social transformation to become more active and independent than married women in both the public and private fields, becoming the weakest link in the patriarchal chain. However, their challenge triggered the reinforcement of patriarchy. Patriarchal societies use economic, judicial, ideological and other means to combat and discipline them in order to consolidate traditional gender relations and reshape male authority. Therefore, from a historical perspective, the situation of single women in early modern England tended to worsen.
