On September 8, 1971, Lin Biao issued a warrant for a counterrevolutionary armed coup in an attempt to murder Mao Zedong. After the conspiracy was exposed, he fled by plane on September 13 and died in a plane crash in the Wendurhan area of the Mongolian People's Republic. On August 20, 1973, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to expel him from the party. On January 25, 1981, he was confirmed by the Special Court of the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China as the principal criminal in the case of Lin Biao's counterrevolutionary group.
