The scene on the screen shifted. A bell rang, greenery flourished, and mountains and rivers lay hidden in the mist.

The view climbed slowly from the hem of a person's robe. A gauzy layer covered the wide blue sleeves. The fabric was extravagantly luxurious, with every stitch and pattern inspiring admiration. The hem, sleeve edges, sash, and jade pendant were all rare treasures.

Even Jin Guangshan, who prided himself on the Jin Clan's gold bricks, golden roof tiles, and countless pavilions and terraces, was impressed by the robe's extravagance. Some things could not be achieved with money or power. This robe, for instance, was already beyond the customary attire of a clan leader.

The leaders of the five great cultivation sects held such exalted status that they could obtain the finest things in the world. Yet they remained confined to their sects' territories. They could enjoy the privileges of their own domains, but had no power to claim the prestige of another clan.
