Synopsis

This book recounts Chinese history over the 54 years from 907, when Zhu Wen founded Later Liang, to 960, when Zhao Kuangyin launched the Chenqiao Mutiny and established the Northern Song. The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era was a period of transition between the Tang and Song, a time when, as one account put it, “the realm fell into chaos, and China’s disasters came one after another, as usurpations and murders followed in quick succession.” Dynasties and rulers rose and fell in turn, like during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, in a dizzying succession. This era left a deep impression on later generations through figures such as Li Keyong and his son Li Cunxu, the brave and skillful rulers of Later Tang; Zhu Wen, the Later Liang emperor, more cunning than Cao Cao; and Li Yu, ruler of Southern Tang, who neglected state affairs and devoted himself to poetry, only to lose his kingdom.

Historically Accurate, Without Making Things Up

Historical fiction has more room for worldbuilding, with vivid characters and no distortion of history. I want a satisfying read that covers dynasties, major and minor events, wars, and loyal civil and military officials, all presented in a historical setting.
