A thousand years ago, the Five Spirits Continent was ruled by a unified nation, the Holy Empire. Its rulers called themselves the divine race, while all the other races were their servants. But as time passed, infighting within the Holy Empire grew ever fiercer, eventually sparking a prolonged civil war. The other races gradually rose to power during the conflict, rebelled against the divine race, and defeated the mighty Holy Empire.
