“Clatter, ”

A faint sound of a door opening rang out with unusual clarity in the stillness of the night.

Immediately afterward, the soft, steady sound of footsteps came from the stairwell, one step at a time.

“Tap, tap, tap...”

Gong Hao sleepily opened his eyes.

His mind was still lost in the haze of slumber. His body felt cold and sore. He turned his head in a daze and looked up.

A slender, upright figure stood at the bend in the stairs.

She was a high school girl dressed in Teitan High School’s blue uniform, tall and graceful, with smooth hair falling over her shoulders. Her clear, radiant features were beautiful in a way that was both gentle and dazzling.

There was not a trace of aggression about her, only an innate steadiness, kindness, and strength.

Her clear, bright eyes held tolerance and warmth, along with a decisiveness and courage that only emerged in moments of danger.

She was the kind of girl who made you feel at ease at first glance.

Ran Mouri immediately noticed Gong Hao curled up in the stairwell, looking no more than five or six years old.

She paused briefly, and concern and confusion appeared in her eyes. She hurried down a few steps and crouched beside him, asking softly in the gentlest voice:

“Little one, why are you sitting here? Why aren’t you going home?”

Gong Hao blinked his still-sleepy eyes and stared blankly at the impossibly beautiful older sister before him. His mind went blank for a few seconds.

Home?

He didn’t have a home anymore.

He pursed his little lips and gave a soft, childlike shake of his head:

“Pretty big sister, I don’t know where my home is...”
