After Marrying a Failed Scholar

He studied hard for over ten years, but every time he sat an exam, disaster struck.

At his first exam for the scholar degree, the room where he sat caught fire.

At his second exam, someone spilled ink all over his paper on the final night.

His family had planned to wait until he made a name for himself through his studies before arranging his marriage. Now he couldn't even pass the scholar exam, and might not make it out alive.

Disheartened, Li Ran fell seriously ill. He gave up on exams and went home to farm!

Poor Lin Yuan was an orphan. Her father, a wealthy landowner, fell victim to bandits and died without even enough money left for a coffin. Her fiancé turned around and married a woman from a prestigious family.

On her way to sell her embroidery, she kindly rescued an older woman, only to find that the woman wanted to become her mother.

Li Ran blocked the entrance to her home. "Miss, please let me off. I don't want to get married."

Lin Yuan nodded. That suited her just fine.

Less than a day later, Li Ran came running back. "Miss, I was wrong. Please marry me."

Everyone said that since Lin Yuan had enjoyed a life of comfort in her first half, she was destined to suffer in the second.

She busied herself with embroidery and farming, while helping him pass the scholar exam on his first try.

Her husband kept rising through the ranks, while his wife cried herself to sleep every night. "Dear, could you slow down your promotions? I haven't even learned how to wear my official lady's robes yet!"
