Yutong’s grandfather died the very day she was born, and the villagers treated her coldly, calling her “death weed” and “wild mugwort sprout.” She and her childhood friend, the boy Zixuan, were constantly bullied by Liu Tiegang, the local tyrant of the Liu family. After the dedicated old village chief died of illness, his eldest son, Dou Zhun, schemed his way into the position and joined forces with Uncle Liu San to oppress the villagers. One severe natural disaster after another struck, turning Wugu Village into an uninhabitable wasteland. Amid a storm of insults, Dou Zhun had no choice but to lead everyone to a new village so they could survive. After enduring countless hardships on the journey, only Yutong and Zixuan made it through. On a cold winter’s day, they were rescued by Park Yitong, a fellow villager who had fled and gone into hiding in the mountains. Together, they spent the winter in their cave home. But when they reached the new village, they discovered it was nothing like they had imagined.
They faced discrimination and coldness from the villagers there. A theft made them enemies of the entire village, forcing them to go up the mountain in search of Park Yitong. Pressured by the crowd, Park Yitong killed himself in despair. The villagers tied Yutong and Zixuan to a raft and pushed them into the river, leaving them to live or die on their own. Fortunately, after everyone had left, the martial arts girl Liqu saved them. To survive, they drifted downstream, setting off on the road once more. Through wind and rain, enduring one hardship after another, they finally reached the city of their dreams.
Wild mugwort sprouts are tenacious. With an unyielding spirit, Yutong bravely keeps on living, thriving without end.
