Mr. Qian Zhongshu's most classic work is also the only full-length novel. It can be called a satirical classic with a unique style in the history of modern Chinese literature. It is known as the "New Confucian Foreign History" and has been the best-selling novel since the 1980s. The novel creates a portrait of a group of intellectuals, mainly Fang Hongjian, in the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, and describes the difficulties they faced in education, marriage and career. Despite its specific historical context, the novel reveals the vulnerabilities of people that still resonate today. The famous literary critic Mr. Xia Zhiqing believed in "The History of Modern Chinese Novels" that ""The Besieged City" is superior to any classical Chinese satirical novel" and called it "the most interesting and delicate novel in the history of modern Chinese literature, and perhaps the greatest novel."
