The Legend of Xue Rengui, Marshal of the Army

Xue Rengui was a legendary figure in Chinese history. This is the story of the outstanding Tang dynasty hero Xue Rengui. It follows the course of his life: originally a commoner, he enlisted in the army and proved to have many strengths. The characterizations of several major figures are especially successful, including Yuchi Gong’s resourcefulness, Cheng Yaojin’s chivalrous courage, and Xue Rengui’s exceptional martial prowess. Later, he sacrifices everything to break down class barriers, a particularly admirable deed. Xue Rengui was a great general of the prosperous Tang dynasty and a worthy minister who fulfilled Emperor Taizong’s prophetic dream. When the tides of war rose again, he donned white armor, rode a white steed, and swept across the battlefield with his Fangtian Halberd, bringing glory to the Tang.

In the story, Ding Shan takes three wives: Dou Xiantong, Chen Jinding, and Fan Lihua. Fan Lihua is a disciple of the Old Mother of Mount Li and possesses boundless magic. In the end, she helps Ding Shan defeat Xiliang amid supernatural events.

Later, Ding Shan is implicated by his son Xue Gang and executed along with his entire family by Empress Wu Zetian.
