The novel revolves around the four tasks of Sanliwan Agricultural Cooperative's autumn harvest, cooperative expansion, party consolidation, and canal opening. It describes the intricate conflicts and entanglements of four families, Ma Duoshou, Fan Denggao, Yuan Tiancheng, and Wang Baoquan. It reflects the conflict between advanced and backward forces in the countryside, and shows the style of rural life in a period of great social change.
The structure of the novel inherits the traditional techniques of Chinese classical novels, and the language is vivid, simple and interesting. The character setting and characterization are exquisite and interesting.

The language throughout the book is also very vivid and very interesting to read.
