The Mediocrity Mirror

The Ordinary Mirror tells the story of my childhood friend Jia Feiyuan. It portrays how our different childhood playmates developed different personalities as rural life changed, and how their fates diverged amid real-world choices and urbanization. Everyone is ordinary, but what does it really mean to be ordinary? We cling to the past in our ordinary lives, yet keep changing to adapt to the ordinary. These little, unremarkable things are the many facets of life, and the very essence of the ordinary.

I dedicate this story to those striving in a rapidly changing society, always trying to break free from their ordinary circumstances. You are in it, and so am I. It concerns every person in society, and countless people out there are connected to me, to all of us.

We all need to think carefully and independently: what does it truly mean to be ordinary, and where does the meaning of ordinariness lie?
