In an ordinary little mountain village live a group of simple, kind, cunning, traditional, and ambitious people. Li Xin and Ye Chao are among them. To break free from the destinies laid out for them, they set off from the same starting point. But, because of one turn of events after another, they ultimately take two completely different paths. Here, backward traditions coexist with reform and development; ambition and progress intertwine with conservatism and greed; and kindness and simplicity stand opposed to cunning and scheming.
