The City of Beasts: Only I Can See Through Their Identities

[A protagonist who grows over time, not a wish-fulfillment novel, plot-focused, with supernatural abilities. If that bothers you, please move along.]

At fifteen, Lin Bufan witnessed his parents turn into monsters and try to eat him and his younger sister.

Just as he was losing hope, his sister’s body began to shine with light in every color, and then she disappeared.

At the same time, the monsters turned back into the likeness of his parents, as though nothing had happened. They even seemed to have forgotten his sister existed.

Only the wreckage strewn across the floor proved that anything had happened, yet they claimed it was the work of criminals.

Surrounded by layers of confusion, he desperately wanted to know why all this had happened. But just as he was about to question the monsters, he remembered the last thing his sister had said before she vanished.

“Don’t let them find out what happened today.”

He kept those words in mind, and they helped him evade danger several times in the days that followed.

Three years passed in the blink of an eye. He found no clues about his sister during that time, but he gained a basic understanding of the world, all because his supernatural ability could distinguish monsters from humans.

…

When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back at you.
