The Night Voyage is divided into twenty volumes across two books. Arranged by subject, it presents its entries in article form and contains more than four thousand entries. Its contents encompass astronomy and geography, human relations and archaeology, the classics, histories, and schools of thought, rites, music, and institutions, as well as everyday objects and curios, plants and the Four Spirits, the Three Teachings and Nine Schools, and the physical sciences and esoteric arts. Its broad scope and extensive collection of material make it a miniature encyclopedia of China.
