Sun Wukong is reborn. He's still going to cause Havoc in Heaven, and this time he'll go even further. During the five hundred years when his substitute is pinned beneath Five Elements Mountain, he subdues every monster along the pilgrimage route.

Five hundred years later, whenever the four masters and disciples mention the name Great Sage Equal to Heaven on their journey, every demon is terrified. Some are so frightened from miles away that they instantly turn into fawning little servants, serving tea and water and flattering him with, “I've long admired the Great Sage's reputation.”

But the True and False Monkey King incident still happens, and there's no stopping it. Sun Wukong knows the truth, but doesn't want to go running around asking people to prove it. By chance, the pilgrimage party passes through the Western Ox Continent, and he plucks up the courage to seek out Patriarch Bodhi, only to stop at the gate, afraid to enter, until the patriarch himself comes out...

Sun Wukong lets loose and does as he pleases, mastering more and more skills, though he often ends up driving Tang Sanzang absolutely mad.

The Tathagata is baffled: how did they get through the Eighty-One Tribulations so quickly?
