A single mistake causes the zombie virus to spread rapidly across the world. Most people become walking corpses known as zombies, while most of the rest awaken supernatural abilities and are called Awakened.
After paying an enormous price, Experimental Subject No. 5, Wu Yan, escapes the Fourth Federation's laboratory district with the dying Mo Yan.
After a period of hiding that is both safe and dangerous, the appearance of a black cat indirectly triggers Wu Yan's awakening. With A Bu's help, Wu Yan gains an ability:

Even in the apocalypse, the powerful upper class continue to exploit the people at the bottom. The Fourth Federation is rotten from within, its government in chaos, its officials forming factions for private gain and oppressing the people.
Under this long oppression, the people at the bottom gradually come to understand. They curse the state of the world and the trash in power.
Thus, the Fifth Federation founded by Wu Yan, the Federation of the Awakened, takes in large numbers of rebel forces from across the land, raises the banner of revolt, and overthrows the tyranny.
