Jiang Shang, courtesy name Ziya, commonly known as Jiang Taigong, was a statesman, military strategist, and master tactician in the late Shang and early Zhou periods, as well as a founding hero of the Zhou dynasty. Learned and full of strategic wisdom, he was fishing on the banks of the Wei River when he met Ji Chang, Lord of the West. As he helped King Wen and King Wu of Zhou overthrow the tyrant Zhou of Shang, he took a broad view of the situation and deftly maneuvered between rival powers. He devised strategies and personally went to the battlefield, earning undying merit. Jiang Ziya made outstanding contributions to military, political, and economic thought, especially in military affairs. He can rightly be called the forefather of military strategists and a wellspring of military knowledge.
