A college graduate who had relied on his grandmother since childhood runs into one dead end after another while looking for work. His money runs out, and even getting enough to eat becomes a problem, so he has no choice but to scrimp and stay in an inn. Then, one night, as he sleeps, thunder cracks across the sky and heavy rain begins to fall. A bolt of lightning strikes him directly. When he wakes, he finds himself in an unfamiliar place.
It is a time of foreign invasion and warlord infighting, with rival factions carving up the land and forcibly conscripting men everywhere. When he opens the door and steps outside, his clothes and appearance are so out of place that he is mistaken for a spy and interrogated. Unfortunately, he knows nothing about anything they ask. With the attitude that it is better to kill a thousand innocents than let one guilty person escape, they are about to execute him when someone suggests that, since the army is recruiting everywhere, they might as well enlist him. Since he can’t do anything else, they assign him to the mess squad to cook for everyone.
Watching the portions grow smaller and smaller, he realizes that many men have been lost in battle. He asks his squad leader to let him go to the front and fight, not to earn merit, but simply to do what he can for his country. Later, he is assigned to the assault squad. He fights bravely in another battle against the enemy, earning the company commander’s admiration. After the assault squad leader is killed, he is appointed as the new leader. Later, when the company decides to form a special forces unit, he is named its commander. He leads his brothers in carrying out the army’s special missions, completing every one of them successfully, and eventually rises to become a major figure of his era.
