The timid girl Su Shijing meets the lonely boy Wen Xu. They see each other's light, protect and accompany one another through the hazy days of youth, and share the journey from first meeting to falling in love.
"In my eyes, you've never been darkness. You're a streak of pure white. I'll be right there with you as we fill in all those beautiful colors." Su Shijing's companionship heals the bleak first half of Wen Xu's life. She believes they saved each other when they were young, and thinks love can withstand anything, but still, it cannot overcome the ways of the world.
Before leaving, Wen Xu tells her, "I hope we can both live freely from now on." But when he returns to say goodbye, all he says is, "I hope you live freely from now on."
After years of struggling, the girl finally works up the courage to seek the boy out again.
The love they felt for each other in their youth has, in the end, become a lingering warmth that leaves much to ponder.
