Su Sheng replied, “A Confucian scholar.”

“Why a Confucian scholar?”

“With a few strokes of the brush, a Confucian scholar can compose poems that will be celebrated for generations. How awe-inspiring!”

“Good answer.”

When Su Sheng had grown up, the old man asked him again, “What do you want to become?”

Su Sheng answered without hesitation, “A Confucian scholar.”

“Why do you still want to be a Confucian scholar?”

The old man nodded gently. Looking at Su Sheng, who now stood as tall as her, she smiled. “Xiao Liu, you've grown up, but you're still not there yet.”
