Synopsis

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of China and the country’s first full-length historical novel written in chapter-and-verse form. Its full title is The Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms, also known as The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It was written by Luo Guanzhong, a renowned novelist of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. After the book was completed, various editions circulated, including the Jiajing Renwu edition. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Mao Zonggang revised Romance of the Three Kingdoms, reorganizing its chapter headings, polishing its prose, and replacing its poetry. The novel depicts nearly a century of history, from the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty to the beginning of the Western Jin Dynasty. Focusing primarily on warfare, it recounts the warlord conflicts and political and military struggles between the states of Wei, Shu, and Wu at the end of the Eastern Han. It concludes with Sima Yan unifying the Three Kingdoms and establishing the Jin Dynasty. The novel portrays the many social conflicts and struggles of the Three Kingdoms era, captures the sweeping historical changes of the period, and brings to life a cast of legendary heroes. The book can broadly be divided into five parts: the Yellow Turban Rebellion, the Disorder of Dong Zhuo, the Warlords’ Race for Power, the Three Kingdoms’ Division, and the Unification of the Three Kingdoms under Jin. On a vast historical stage, it unfolds one grand battle after another. Luo Guanzhong weaves the Thirty-Six Stratagems into the story, combining compelling plotlines with the art of military strategy.
