Su Nuan has had an incredibly difficult life. Her mother never cared for her, and her clothes were always bought on sale. Her father worked every day, and whenever he came home, he paid attention only to his wife, barely noticing his own daughter.
In her first year of high school, her mother had an affair, and her father took her back to their hometown. Su Nuan thought things were finally getting better, but then her father fell off a scaffold while working at a construction site. He died despite efforts to save him, and from then on, Su Nuan survived on government assistance.
When she transferred to a new school in her second year of high school, she met Gu Chen, a spirited young man. Every day, Gu Chen helped Su Nuan with her math. Over time, they fell for each other, but neither of them ever dared to say it aloud.
Gu Chen: “Su Nuan, in our next lives, let's meet a little later. Then I’ll make sure to marry you.”
Su Nuan: “A Chen, you were the love of my life.”
When Su Nuan grew old and told her grandchildren about him, she would always say regretfully, “If I’d been a little braver back then, maybe we could have had a future.” Then she would shake her head and say, “No, it would never have worked. How could someone like me ever deserve his love?”
