At first, they loved and fought each other. Then they married before falling in love. In the end, they joined hands to save their country.

“My heart is not free of worldly desire, and my past is not yet settled. I believe in neither gods nor Buddha; I only adore you.”

Xie Qingyu

On the Lantern Festival of 1920, outside Guang’an Gate in Beiping, twelve-year-old Fu Suiyan, a former Qing princess, went to the Yongding River night market with her fiancé and happened upon Xie Qingyu, an injured young revolutionary. By chance, she saved him.

Fu Suiyan thought only that this young man was exceptionally handsome. Little did the Seventh Princess know that this single encounter would bind her to the man before her for the rest of her life.

When they met again, she was a foreign spy trapped in a quagmire, and he was Shanghai’s rising military governor. They held each other hostage, clashed as fiercely as they fell in love, and slowly developed feelings for each other.

But in these turbulent times, who could afford romance? How could they dare hope for even a moment of peace?
