The Head-Commanding Talisman

Three vivid red cinnabar talismans were carved into the stone wall. Each began with the character for “edict,” with the character for “spirit” beneath it.

Several feet above the water, numerous coffins were stacked inside niches in the cliff face. In the highest alcove, three figures sat dressed in red and green. Looking closely, they turned out to be mummified Buddhas.

The three of them were stunned. The nanny and the cook were superstitious to begin with, and at the sight they dropped to their knees in the sand, trembling as they bowed and kowtowed frantically, shouting:

“May the spirits protect us! We trespassed in a forbidden place. Please forgive us, please forgive us…”
