Modern Classics: The Romance of Hong Xiuquan (Six-Volume Set)

The Romance of Hong Xiuquan is an important work in the history of modern Chinese fiction. Following the historical work The History of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, it was a full-length novel that passionately celebrated the revolutionary history of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The author condensed and reshaped the sprawling, multifaceted historical events and numerous figures of the Taiping Revolution, creating a series of vivid characters and using artistic prose to depict the movement's rise, growth, and decline.

Although the novel focuses on the history and figures of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, its portrayal of the opposing Qing court is generally quite objective and does not resort to vilification. While it mocks and disparages the so-called “eminent ministers of the Restoration,” such as Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zongtang, and Li Hongzhang, through subtle irony, it remains an outstanding work of historical fiction. Since its publication as a standalone edition in 1908, it has had an extraordinarily wide and profound influence.

The Romance of Hong Xiuquan not only accurately reflects the author's ideological leanings at the time, but also bears the deep imprint of the era in which he lived. The novel's fervent patriotism and revolutionary heroism continue to have great educational value today.
