Synopsis

Hand-to-hand combat: close-quarters fighting! Its way is to cultivate inner strength while maintaining an outward air of composure; to look like a lovely woman, yet strike like a fearsome tiger; to shape the body and gather the breath, moving as one with the spirit; to be as elusive as the sun, darting like a hare; to pursue form and chase shadows, flashing like a phantom; to breathe in and out too quickly for any rules to contain; to move freely in every direction, so swiftly one can scarcely perceive it. This way lets one stand against a hundred, and a hundred against ten thousand… The martial world has both blades and feelings. The Moad Dao's dominance, the Heng Dao's sharpness, the Yi Dao's opulence, and the Jing'e Dao's uncanny understanding of human nature. A blade is like its wielder, and its wielder is like a blade. Tan Shier and Nan Li share a love of one heart. Yan Wuyan and Cha Mengmeng share a love fit for a wanderer. Wei Kuang and Qiuniang share a love that lasts until death. Gu Mei and Helan Jinming share a tragic love. Dugu Tuo and Lian Hongchen share a tormenting love. Xue Lang, the "Flower Calamity," knows a love without love, while Liu Yi is driven by passion into lust, unable to understand love or romance. The martial world has feelings, and it has blades and swords. Ge Ruoxu's malice, Dugu Tuo's viciousness, and Xie Ruhai's inability to tell right from wrong. A small grievance can be drowned in wine, but a great injustice in the martial world can only be put right with a sword. There are also Xu Xuanping's wild independence, the Lazy Monk's carefree spirit, and Pei Min's open-hearted honor. The older generation of wandering knights is gradually fading away. Each generation brings forth its own talented heroes, each holding sway for a few decades.

Wuxia, the Martial World, and the Imperial Court

Through a hundred battles, I roam the martial world with my flute held high; heroes brave the storm, and life and death weigh little. A pair of mandarin ducks endure the silkworm’s bitter toil, while a smile blooms beside a white horse’s saddle.
