Why are people afraid of the dark?
That's because the darkness is full of unknowns. Even if a house that has been lived in for more than ten years is covered by darkness, it will make people feel scared.
People are afraid of a rickety monster coming out of the darkness, and of the legendary ghosts and demons hiding in it.
