This book aims to show readers the turbulent and legendary sixty-four-year life of Zhu Di, a great ruler and master strategist!
The first volume, “The Empire,” follows Zhu Di's coming of age and the brilliant, convoluted, tense, and thrilling struggle for power between him and Zhu Yunwen. Zhu Di wanted to become emperor, but he had no desire to rebel. He believed he was better suited than his eldest nephew to be emperor, and more capable of leading the most powerful empire in the world, but his father, Zhu Yuanzhang, never gave him the chance. Zhu Di was able to raise an army of just eight hundred men and seize power in three years thanks to a spiritual mentor, a devoted wife, two good sons, a band of loyal brothers, and his own masterful political maneuvering, extraordinary courage, and unyielding resolve. Xiong County, Baigou, Dingxing, and Yi County became pivotal points in Zhu Di's fate, while three “divine winds” miraculously changed the course of his life...
The second volume, “Yongle,” recounts the remarkable story of Zhu Di's twenty-two years in power, as he outmaneuvered rival factions with an iron hand and ushered in the unparalleled Yongle Golden Age. Zhu Di's greatness lay in not following in Zhu Yuanzhang's footsteps. Instead, he ushered in a new era and laid a solid foundation for the survival and growth of the Ming Empire. His golden age was marked not only by admirable courage, but also by grand ambition and far-sighted vision. Sadly, his descendants failed to grasp the far-reaching significance of his plan to build a “world order centered on the Ming Dynasty,” just as they failed to understand why Zhu Di made five campaigns north of the desert, why he insisted on moving the capital, or why he sent Zheng He on voyages to the Western Seas.
After reading this book, you will discover just how profound and enduring Zhu Di's influence was on the ancient city of Beijing and on China and the wider world. His legacy is far from over.
After reading this, I got to know a brand new Zhu Di. Emperor Yongle can be called one of the top ten emperors of China. I also agree with the author. Compared with Zhu Yuanzhang, Zhu Di is the real founder of the Ming Dynasty! Although some of his achievements cannot be compared with those of the brilliant Emperors of Qin, Han, Wu and Tang, Taizong, he seems to have successfully avoided the mistakes they made! Also, regarding Jingnan, I think if a strong figure like Zhu Di did not appear, Ming Dynasty might be divided! Coupled with the true love between Zhu Di and Queen Xu, it makes me like Zhu Di even more!
I hate Jianwen Emperor Zhu Yunwen very much. He has a weak character and little ability. But what I admire most is Zhu Di's vision and courage. The Yongle prosperous era he created is really amazing. I think this book is not only about history, but also taught me a lot about how to behave in the world.
I always thought that when Zhu Di was preparing to rebel, the city of Beijing was under his control and he should have a lot of troops at his disposal. Unexpectedly, it was the beginning of the collapse of heaven! It took nearly four years for Jingnan to fight. If Zhu Yunwen hadn't been too weak and Zhu Di was more tenacious, plus some luck, this rebellion with almost zero success rate would have succeeded. Zhu Di became the only vassal king to successfully rebel in the past five thousand years! After reading this, I kind of like Zhu Di as the emperor. Just looking at his glorious achievements, compared with Emperor Qin, Han Wu and Tang Taizong, Zhu Di seems to be inferior. Although they have a lot in common, Zhu Di successfully avoided the fatal mistakes they made! In addition, Zhu Di did not kill heroes indiscriminately and had many political achievements. Compared with his father, he was the true founder of the Ming Dynasty! And what I like the most is the rare royal love between Zhu Di and Queen Xu❤️
