Taiwan Through the Years: A Chronicle of Major Events Since 1900, Fourth Edition

A Taiwanese classic that has been a bestseller for ten years, this is the ideal illustrated guide to a century of Taiwan's history. This new edition adds illustrated coverage of cross-strait relations entering “deep waters.”

A century of ups and downs, spanning Taiwan's long struggle and all its joys and sorrows.

From the beginning of Japanese colonization to Ma Ying-jeou's successful reelection, Taiwan entered a more complicated stage of development, and cross-strait relations moved into “deep waters.” In chronological order, this book records more than a century of life on this island, from 1900 onward, covering its land, people, and times, as well as politics, the economy, society, education, and culture. Events include the Wushe uprising against Japanese rule led by the Seediq's Mona Rudao, Taiwan's retrocession, the February 28 Incident, the story of Green Island, the Kuomintang's retreat to Taiwan, the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, Lei Chen and Free China, the Formosa Incident, the baseball craze, Teresa Teng, Lo Ta-yu, the Wang-Koo talks, the founding of the Democratic Progressive Party, the opening of visits to relatives in mainland China, the Diaoyu Islands controversy, the face-off between Ma Ying-jeou and Chen Shui-bian, the September 21 earthquake, and the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement controversy... The book hopes that Taiwan's pain will be felt by all Chinese people, and that its hopes will inspire them as well. It believes that this effort will bring people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait closer together and help them join hands to create a prosperous and democratic future for the Chinese nation.
