Synopsis

The collection of short stories in The New Yorker has been delayed for decades, and now it includes two new works by Bai Xianyong since the 21st century, namely "Danny Boy" and "Tea for Two" about homosexuality. Because the publisher is afraid that his hair will turn gray waiting for the publication of this collection, there are only six articles at the moment, so he has to collect them first. In the two summers of 1963 and 1964, the author collected many New York style paintings in his mind, and these pictures slowly turned into a series of "New York Stories". The first few articles, such as "Going to the Skyscraper", did not have a central theme. It was not until one spring in 1965 that the author began to write "The Exorcist" and designated this novel as the first article in the "New Yorker" series. Then he wrote "Resentment of the Immortals". In fact, at the same time, the author was also working on the "Taipei People" series, and turned his time and attention to that collection. Therefore, "The New Yorker" lasted for decades, with one or two articles occasionally popping up in the middle. However, a century has passed, and "New York" gradually retreated into a distant "magic city" in the author's mind. The city gate is wide open, and it is still unconditionally accepting some wandering souls.

I particularly like the piece "The Exorcist", it feels like I'm reading my own story. Many plots in the book resonated with me, especially the protagonist's loneliness and confusion in a foreign country. I just got married and lived in a new city, and I had similar feelings. Overall, this is a book well worth reading.

New York is an out-and-out immigrant metropolis, where people from all over the world gather here. Mixed together in this melting pot of races, it is easy to lose yourself, because New York is an infinitely large, infinitely deep, and ruthless world. Personal joys and sorrows float in it, like a drop in the ocean, and are drowned when turned over.

The first two New Yorker articles are well written, but the last few seem to have some flaws. Taipei people write better.
