This book explores the dynamic relationship between the masses and the group, and how and why the masses submit to the power of their rulers. Human history in the 20th century was filled with devastating disasters such as collective persecution, group fanaticism, and world wars, which prompted Canetti to think about the relationship between the masses and power. "Instructions" and "stings" are two core concepts used by Canetti to explain the relationship between the masses and power. Canetti believes that the essence of power is the harm caused by "instructions" to people (i. E., "Stings"). The most primitive form of retroactive instructions is the escape of animals when faced with death threats, so "every order implies a cruel and terrible death sentence."
